SC Magazine interviews Viewfinity President re: Privilege Management Best Practices

by Mary Rose 9. May 2011 09:38

Viewfinity’s President, Gil Rapaport, delves into detail about Privilege Management Best Practices with SC Magazine reporter, Angela Moscaritolo.

According to Gil Rapaport, a least privilege environment is desirable because a company that provides administrative rights to end users exposes the organization to numerous security threats.  Users with administrative rights are able to install, uninstall, and run suspect applications that can prove harmful to an organization’s IT security infrastructure.  In a least privileges environment, IT administrators remove admin rights from end users and instead implement policies that allow approved applications to run and elevate privileges as needed.

A significant driver that is leading organizations to move to a least privilege environment is the Windows 7 migration.  IT groups are engaging both the migration with implementing a least privileges environment because end users will not even know their admin rights have been removed.  At the same time, many organizations are also not aware of how exposed their desktops are when users are running with admin rights.

A best practice is to know which users have admin rights on the Windows domain, so IT admins can better manage and monitor the network.  To find out which users have admin rights on the Windows domain, Viewfinity provides a free Local Admin Discovery Tool download.  This tool is helpful as it detects who exactly has admin rights.  IT admin can then take action if needed to remove these rights.
